The CIR has been formed to provide a multidisciplinary environment for graduate students and staff to engage in collaborative research in the Internet and surrounding emerging wireless systems.

CIR has alliances with DSTO, US Air Force Research Laboratories, NICTA and CRC for Smart Internet. CIR is also affiliated with the proposed ARC Research Network on Communications (ACoRN) and the South Australian Consortium for IT&T.
